What happens when you decide to ride the heart of modern mountain biking in a single day? Supported by Mons Royale, short film Threads in the Dirt follows Matthew Fairbrother as he links the Sea to Sky’s biggest descents in Pemberton, Whistler, Squamish and North Vancouver into one huge ultra-endurance mission.
332 kilometres, 10,250 metre climb, 23:48 hours.
For Matt, this epic ride was a way of honouring the legacy of mountain biking in the Sea to Sky, the land, and the community built around it. It was a way of experiencing the whole region in one go: no shortcuts, no repeats, just a single line tracing the landscape that built so much of the sport’s identity. “The climbs were brutal, the descents unforgettable,” says Matt. “Every transition stitched together another part of the story that has influenced riders across the world, myself included."
Growing up in New Zealand, the films and stories coming out of the Sea to Sky had an enormous influence on Matt, shaping the way he rode and changing what he believed was possible. “I’ve felt connected to this corridor long before I ever arrived,” says Matt. And when he finally landed in 2022, the community was already showing up for him. “That sense of support, progression and shared vision is what makes this place so special. It’s why I wanted to honour the Sea to Sky with this project.”
Threads in the Dirt is more than a record of a long day out. It’s a reflection of the connection between New Zealand and British Columbia, between past and present, between the people who built this mountain biking scene and the riders who continue to shape it. The Sea to Sky raised the ceiling for what mountain biking could be, and contributing even a small thread to that legacy felt like a natural step for Matt.
“If there’s one thing I hope people take away, it’s this: honour where the sport came from, respect what you have in front of you, and chase the things that pull you,” says Matt. “We all leave something behind - even if it’s just a thread in the dirt. That’s how the legacy stays alive.”
Mons Royale are proud to sponsor Matt Fairbrother in his mountain biking journey and in the creation of this film. Threads in the Dirt will premiere on Monday 12 January, 12pm PST via YouTube.
